Star Trek Influence: Captain Horatio Hornblower – Episode 4

The literary character Captain Horatio Hornblower appeared in 17 novels by author C.S. Forester. The books were published over 30 years, from 1937 to 1967.

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry loved these stories so much that he patterned much of the Star Trek show on that nautical world. The protagonist, the youthful and dashing Horatio Hornblower, was the blueprint for the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, James T. Kirk.

In fact, when meeting with actor William Shatner for the first time, Roddenberry told him to read the Horatio Hornblower books.  Everything he wanted to know about the Kirk character was in them.

Co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto take a look at the similarities between Kirk and Hornblower and also examine the 1951 film starring Gregory Peck. It’s all in this episode of 70s Trek.
